What is Samba...
Samba is one of the most popular music styles in Brazil. Since its creation, samba has been taking over the world with its unique and contagious rhythm that expresses so well the very nature of Brazilian culture.
History of Samba
Samba was born from the mixture of African and Brazilian music. It is played with percussion instruments, along with guitar and cavaquinho. Most samba lyrics refer to the day-to-day life in the big cities, mainly focusing on the poor parts of society.
The first samba roots were planted in Brazil with the arrival of African slaves when Brazil was still Portugal’s colony back in 1500s. For more than 400 years, Brazil was a mixture of different cultures and languages, different rhythms and sounds but eventually Brazilian culture started to be shaped into what it is today.
It was in the 1930s when samba was broadcast by radio throughout the country. Small music clubs started to appear and with them, the most recognized samba’s talents. At these gatherings the firsts of the several samba variations started to be created just for fun but their composers hardly knew these original creations would soon lead the samba music scenario.
After World War II and because of the influence of American culture, Bossa Nova, a mixture of samba and jazz, was launched in Brazil, making its way to America and other parts of the world. Tom Jobim is the most recognized name from this period. His most famous song is Garota de Ipanema (Girl from Ipanema). The lyrics are by Vinicius de Moraes, also a legend in Brazilian culture.
The years that followed were filled with new names and samba variations. Samba music doesn't really have a linear evolution; it is constantly created in different contexts, in different kinds of ways and with different mixtures.
Carnaval
The Brazilian Carnaval is an annual festival in Brazil held 4 days before Ash Wednesday and marks the beginning of Lent.
Brazilian neighborhood associations organize samba clubs or Samba Schools; they put on spectacular carnaval parades. The samba parade is the work of neighborhood communities working together. Much more than musical groups, they are in fact, neighborhood associations that cater for a variety of community needs such as educational and health care resources.
